Thiruvananthapuram, also known as Trivandrum, is referred to as the "Evergreen City of India." It is considered one the greenest cities in the country, and has ranked as the best city in India for Housing and Transportation ease and facilities.
The city is the capital of the Kerala and therefore houses several public sector offices as well and prestigious universities and research center, including the famous Vikram Sarabhai Space Center.
While originally more than half of Trivandrums citizens were government employees, the investments in IT and Bio-technology is starting to pay off, and more and more professionals are found holding positions in the Information and Sciences Sectors. Its main IT area - Technopark - now contributes 80% of Keralas software exports.
Tourism also plays a large role in the economy of the city, with foreign tourists using the capital as a hub to travel to various other destinations in Kerala. The city has its own tourist attractions in the nearby Kovalam beach, Neyyar wildlife sanctuary and the famous Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple located in the heart of the city.
