Patiala is a city located around a castle called the Qila Mubarak, which literally translated means "The Fortunate Castle". The famous Patiala salwar and the traditional turban and jutti clothing have their roots in this city.
The main attractions in the city are the famous Qila Mubarak complex, the imposing Sheesh Mahal and the Baradari Gardens. The city is a major education hub, with various prestigious schools and universities established in the area, and is also famous for its sporting facilities.
With its high literacy rate - 86% - and its deep cultural traditions, Patiala is a highly sophisticated city. Its architecture too reflects elements of both Rajput style as well as Islamic styles.
