With a recorded history dating well into the third century BC, Madurai is one the oldest cities in India and animportant centre of Tamil culture. Madurai has seen dozens of rulers come and go but retained its character throughout. It remains a temple town, based around the famous and vast Meenakshi Amman Temple, which is often described as being so vast that it is a city in itself.
In modern times, the city has become well known for its industries and educational institutions. It contributes considerably to the talent pool in the region, and employers and firms have been quick to open shop in the city to take advantage of the stream of graduates.
The industries include automobile, rubber, chemicals, and IT. The city also has many granite manufacturing industries. The government sponsored Special Economic Zones created in the area have boosted IT companies and prospects in the city.
