Jamshedpur is known as the first planned industrial city in India, and is currently the most populous city in the state of Jharkhand. The city was founded by Jamshedji Tata around his massive steel operations in the area.
Besides being home to some of India’s largest industries and companies, Jamshedpur also houses more than a thousand small and medium scale support industries. Its planning and administration is seen as a benchmark for cities and municipal corporations not only in India but across the world.
The area is rich in not just iron ore but also coal, bauxite and lime. The various small and medium companies in the area are largely concerned with manufacturing, engineering goods, industrial gases, automobile parts and engines.
Jamshedpur has one of the highest literacy rates in the country with many prestigious institutions now located there. A university town vibe now mixes with its industrial roots. XLRI and the National Institute of Technology are some examples.
