Jabalpur, in Madhya Pradesh, is a historical center for many dynasties including the Gond, Marathas and Mughals. The Narmada River sustains a largely agriculture based economy with its fertile soils and water supply. The industries in the city centre around army services including the vehicle factory, gun carriage factory, and ordnance factory, all of which supply high quality products to the Indian Army. The mineral wealth and ready made garments in the area also help prop up the city's economy.
Tourism is a growing industry in the city, with the action centred around Bhedaghat, an imposing natural formation of marble rocks on either side of the Narmada river. Jabalpur is also the access point for some of Indias best tiger sanctuaries and national parks, including Kanha National Park and Pench National Park.
It is a less well known fact that the game of snooker was invented in Jabalpur in the late 19th century.
