CTO assumes the responsibility of implementing technology based solutions for the firm, analyzing system requirements and managing the company operations. The CTO being the head of the Information Systems of the firm and a vital part of the senior management team is responsible for developing IT strategies for the firm and ensuring that the firm’s operations are well integrated for effective performance. The IT systems include computers, networks, printers and the staff who operates these systems. The CTO outsources the work of developing and designing effective IT solutions to meet the production and operational needs of the firm. He / She is also responsible for outlining the IT policies of the firm.
The CTO reports to the Managing Director or the company’s president. It often takes years to reach this position in the firm since experience and knowledge of technology systems is essential for this role. In addition, the CTO must be able to visualize future trends and requirements that can resolve the company’s operational issues. Innovative thinking is highly desirable trait for this role.
The CTO is responsible for guiding the design and development of information based systems within the company, defining the rules, procedures and the measures that the company should take to meet business goals, prepare the budget for IT department, inviting tenders for IT systems design and development work, choosing IT vendors for this work, and evaluating IT needs of the firm. The CTO is also responsible for monitoring all research and development work undertaken by the firm for product design and any other IT initiatives.
