Guwahati, an ancient city in Assam, and one of the fastest developing regions in the country, it is often called the "Gateway to the North East", as the landlocked state of Assam and Guwahati in particular serve as a vital hub when travelling or transporting goods from any of the other states in the North East area.
The city is also known for its many Hindu temples and views of the mountains and valleys that surround it. It is the major commercial and educational hub of the North-East and is even home to the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati.
Besides being a hub for trade and commerce around the agricultural produce of the North-East, primarily Assam tea, Guwahati is also known for being a transportation and services hub, and a fast developing cosmopolitan city with a multitude of malls and multiplexes. The Guwahati refinery is another major source of employment and revenue. Recently, along with the increase in FMCG goods, there has been a boom in real estate development and retail, and Guwahati is fast becoming a modern Indian city in its own right.
