The famous and eternal hill station of Darjeeling is located in the Lesser Himalayan range in northern West Bengal. It is known world over for its tea, its scenery and the famous Himalayan Railway, which is now a world heritage site. Darjeeling is a melting pot of cultures, integrating British, Nepalese, Bengali and Tibetan influences.
Its more famous as a tourist getaway from hot plains to the south, and especially for the internationally renowned fine tea grown on its hills. Darjeeling produces almost one-tenth of India’s Tea, and the tea estates also produce other cash crops such as cardamom, maize etc.
The town rose in prominence for the everyday traveller after multitudes of film directors based their movies and song sequences in its hills. The trend continues to this day. Since then, Darjeeling has captured the heart of the tourist seeking a peaceful getaway among its misty mountains.
