Chandigarh is a union territory that serves as the common capital for Punjab and Haryana. It was the first planned city in post-independence India. Chandigarh has the highest per capita income in the country and is reported to be one of the most livable cities in India.
The public sector is a major employer in the state since it administers three territories. Therefore, government employees and retired servicemen make up a large proportion of the state's population. Other noteworthy industries in the state include paper manufacturing, metal and alloy machinery, auto parts, food products and pharmaceuticals. Chandigarh is also currently attempting to break in the IT sector, with the massive Chandigarh IT Park project, and hopes to take advantage of its proximity to Delhi, Haryana, Punjab and the existing IT economy in the area.
The gardens, planned buildings, and other monuments in the city are the main attractions in what is often termed as the cleanest city in India, and the trees and plants are as much part of the city’s plans as the roads and buildings in this neat and tidu city.
