A city with a history spanning over three-thousand years, Bhubaneswar is the largest city in Orissa and a highly important religious center in India. Bhubaneswar along with Puri and Konark form the golden triangle of East India’s most visited religious destinations. The modern city was designed by German architect Otto Koenigsberger, and is a growing hub for IT and education.
The city was the ancient capital of the Kalinga Empire, and its ruins are peppered all across the area around the city. The old part of the city, which is also called the temple town, is congested and is lacking in infrastructure, and this is exactly the problem that the planned city was meant to combat.
Almost 96% of the city’s workforce is employed in the service industries, which include the most important industries of civil administration and tourism. The growth of the IT industry has propelled the city even further, and it currently has one of the highest rates of employment in the country.
