Bareilly is best known for its furniture manufacturing, especially its cane manufacturing, and also as a historical trading post for agricultural products in the area. These include the regions main crops - cotton, cereals, millets and sugar. Traditionally, the area was largely known for its wheat, and the economy remains centred around agriculture, although there has been rapid growth and diversification over the last decade. The city also houses many public sector undertakings.
Bareilly is also a local centre of education, with the famous Rohilkhand University and Bareilly College situated there. The unique Indian Veterinary Research Institute is also located in the city.
