The town of Anand is the administrative centre of the famous Anand district, know best as the milk centre of India. The are rose to prominence with the establishment of the Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation, better known as Amul. The city now also boasts a National Diary Development Board, and various universities.
The Economy of Anand has started to diversify off late, with the backbone being centred around the Agriculture and Diary industry. Other major crops include tobacco and banana. Over the last decade, a slew of factories and large industrial operations have been set up on the outskirts to take advantage of the superior infrastructure in the area. These include Iron & Steel companies, electrical plants and various other large scale ventures.
The best known institution in the city is the renowned Institute of Rural Management, founded by Verghese Kurien, which sets the tone for rural development discussions across the country.
