Is your favourite IPL team among the most affordable?

Cricket fever is sweeping the nation once again, with the Indian Premier League (IPL) well underway and passionate fans packing the stadiums.

The juggernaut competition is in its twelfth year and all eyes are on the reigning champions as the Chennai Super Kings defend their title.

Unfortunately for some fans, the price of admission will be too high for the chance to see their favourite team snatch victory.

A recent analysis by Adzuna has used our salary data to examine the average advertised salary within each club’s region and compared it to the average cost of a home match ticket.

Sunrisers Hyderabad are the most affordable

Of the eight teams in the tournament, Sunrisers Hyderabad are not only a thrilling team to watch, they are also the most affordable, with the average price of a home match ticket costing fans 2247.

With an average monthly salary of 59,083 in the region, Sunrisers supporters will only have to cough up 4% of their income to afford the average home match ticket.

Orange Army fans can also nab some of the cheapest tickets available in this year’s IPL with prices starting at 500 and not exceeding 5468.

Delhi Capitals are the most overpriced (but Royal Challengers Bangalore are the most expensive overall)

The newly rebranded Delhi Capitals are the most overpriced team for fans to watch this season, with the average cost of a home match ticket setting them back ₹7599.

It’s a difficult purchase to justify for supporters who have never seen their team appear in an IPL final, and who placed at the bottom of the leaderboard in last year’s tournament.

In terms of affordability, Delhi Capitals fans are forking out the greatest portion of their monthly income – almost 20% – to afford the expense of an average ticket, with the average salary in the state sitting at ₹40,417 per month.

Coming in at a close second, supporters of Royal Challengers Bangalore will need almost 18% of their monthly salary to purchase an average home match ticket at ₹10,298.

The Royal Challengers also have the most expensive tickets overall, with prices starting at ₹1838 and skyrocketing to ₹38,500 for the best seats in the house.

Suffering a disastrous campaign at the beginning of the season with six consecutive defeats, captain Virat Kohli and the team will have their work cut out for them in order to earn back the trust of their fans.

How much you can expect to pay for each team

Last year’s winners the Chennai Super Kings are once again dominating the field under skipper MS Dhoni with a stellar start to the season.

Their cheapest home match tickets are the second most expensive of the tournament with prices starting at ₹1300 – though this doesn’t seem to be a problem, with several of their stadium fixtures selling out.

For fans short on cash and looking for tickets at the cheapest price, you can catch the Kolkata Knight Riders on their home turf for a steal at ₹400.

Those with a little more to spend can watch Kings XI Punjab, Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad for just ₹500.
